Pier B Resort expects to welcome its first guests Thursday afternoon. Developer Sandy Hoff said check-ins at the new hotel along Duluth’s waterfront will begin at 4 p.m.

He referred to the day as a “soft opening” but said that most of the hotel’s 140 rooms have been booked, and the resort likely will be filled to capacity this weekend as runners and their supporters flock to Duluth for Grandma’s Marathon.

The final touches are still being made to the $30 million four-story waterfront hotel.

The new hotel was built on a site that was formerly home to the Lafarge cement terminal as well as adjacent property acquired from the Duluth Economic Development Authority. Four conjoined 100-foot-tall concrete silos remain. The structures once were used to store cement but now sit empty.

Hoff is one of 15 local investors in the project.
