Tensions are still running high in Milwaukee’s Sherman Park neighborhood following the police shooting death of Sylville Smith on August 12.
State Rep. Jonathan Brostoff and youth organizer with the ACLU, Jarrett English, were arrested at about 10pm Tuesday night near where Smith was shot.
The New York Daily News reports:
“A Wisconsin state lawmaker who was thrown to the ground and arrested Tuesday night at the scene of a fatal police shooting and violent unrest in Milwaukee said he was just trying to help.
Rep. Jonathan Brostoff went to the Sherman Park neighborhood at 10 p.m. after hearing of the arrests of approximately 10 people, he said. Residents had complained that 30 to 40 people gathered around 8 p.m. near the area where Sylville Smith, 23, was fatally shot by an officer earlier this month.
The 10 were busted for disorderly conduct and resisting an officer about two hours before Brostoff arrived.
Brostoff, a Milwaukee Democrat, said most of the crowd had left and he was talking with the people who remained when officers approached.”
