New pilot program offers alternatives to landfills

Without a garbage disposal or a compost pile, food waste usually ends up going into the landfill and having a long-term negative impact on the environment.

The Department of Public Works is introducing a new 12-month pilot program that will provide a separate cart for organics collection as an added service option for a fee.

The benefits of organics collection are convenience, reducing waste sent to landfills and promoting healthy, nutrient-rich soil.

This program is being piloted in several Milwaukee neighborhoods including Bay View, East Side and Riverwest and some surrounding areas.

Those interested in participating can fill out an interest form.

Participants in the program will receive a 64 gallon cart with collection service, a welcome starter kit and ongoing support.

This service will provided an additional $12.75 per month.
