MILWAUKEE – To a capacity crowd and roaring applause, the Milwaukee School Board unanimously passed a resolution to make the district a “safe haven.”

MPS is vowing to protect students and families threatened by deportation enforcement by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Thursday’s school board meeting drew personal, touching stories of families who would be protected under the resolution.

School Board Member, Dr. Tatiana Joseph co-sponsored the resolution.

“Schools are sanctuaries…where children come to learn. …where children come for peace (and) hope.” Dr. Joseph came to the United States from Costa Rica as an undocumented child. She lived in fear of her parents being arrested and deported.

Dr. Joseph wasn’t alone in her testimony.
