RACINE- The school year is ending for many students around Wisconsin, and an organization in Racine County will be working to provide students with volunteer opportunities for the summer. The Volunteer Center of Racine County is scheduling youth camps throughout the summer, and the sign up deadline is Friday, June 9.

Ricardo Torres at The Journal Times reports:

Megan Abramson was an active volunteer as a child and as a student at Union Grove High School she would go to places like St. Monica’s Senior Living and ask “what do you need?”

“I graduated high school with over 500 hours of volunteer work … You actually feel like you’re doing something good,” Abramson said. “It definitely helped me figure out what to do with my life.”

Abramson just finished her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is now spending the summer a youth leader for summer camps at the Volunteer Center of Racine County.

The volunteer center is preparing for a full summer of volunteer youth camps and have extended the sign up deadline to Friday, June 9.

Youth program coordinator Rebecca Beck said the volunteer center is expecting to have at least 100 youths spend some time at one of its nine sites.

“They’re the foundation of our community,” Beck said. “Volunteerism is the foundation. If we build on that we can only get better.”

There are only a select number of spots available for each camp, but there might be space available for someone who signs up after the June 9 deadline, Beck said.
